DON’T FORGET TO PINCH THOSE BARBS, PRACTICE CATCH & RELEASE ONLY FROM THE 16TH OF NOV TO THE LAST SATURDAY IN APR IN 2017! AFTER TODAY ALL CREEKS RIVERS ARE CLOSED EXCEPT THE TRUCKEE FROM TROUT CREEK TO STATELINE AND THE LITTLE TRUCKEE BETWEEN STAMPEDE AND BOCA!!!!
NOTE FOR THE WEEK: Unsettled weather this week with temps in the 50’s! River is flowing pretty good, water clarity is CLOUDY, and fish are willing to bite on well-presented offerings. Early spring fishing can be pretty productive given the scenario and some really big trout are caught during these next few months.
TRUCKEE RIVER: Trout Creek to Stateline barbless Flies and lures only. NO BAIT! NO SCENTED LURES! CATCH & RELEASE ONLY PLEASE! 1000 FT BELOW TAHOE CITY TO TROUT CREEK IS CLOSED! GENERAL REG SECTION IS CLOSED UNTIL THE LAST SATURDAY IN APRIL, THE 29TH!!!!
Tahoe City 1620! CFS Truckee (ABOVE DONNER CREEK) 2100 CFS, Below Martis Creek (Glenshire) 2600 CFS! Below Prosser Creek 3050 CFS, Boca 4640 CFS, Farad 5300 CFS-water temps: 41-44.
BIG TRUCKEE: With the current flows being quite high one will still be fishing the softer water closer to the bank, with flow to it, as trout will not be fighting the higher flows found in the middle of the river. Trout this time of year, and in the situation we’re in, can be found in some shallow water just to avoid the flow and use as little energy as possible! Get proficient with your streamer techniques because the payoff could be one of the elusive big browns that reside in the T. From Boca, downstream to Stateline, flows are pretty high and this is where most are concentrating their efforts just because parking can be found. It’s not often that Streamers fishing is better than the nymph rigs but it’s that time of year! Don't discount Crayfish patterns as these can be effective, they’re easy target for large trout and are often overlooked with traditional streamers! 2x and 3x for streamer rigs, leaning more towards the 2x. If the streamer gig isn’t your thing don’t worry as there are still plenty of trout being caught on nymph rigs. Darker colored Stones, BWO’s, Baetis, and Midges are all present on the Trout’s diet this time of year. For the purist, one can sit on the banks and wait for some nice fish to rise to BWO’s and Baetis dries along the shoulders of deep pools or slowly drying their wings further out in pools with some flow. On another note let’s all remember proper ethics and C&R techniques as temps have dropped. Let’s not play trout to exhaustion and handle minimally or not at all. Remember, there will be days where you'll do great and the next you'll get your you know what handed to you, it's the Truckee. To learn the river exponentially, hire one of our local guides. It's worth the money if you fish this occasionally or want to learn it's secrets! Great list of local guides on bottom of page.
LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER: NO BAIT!!! NO SCENTED LURES!!! PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ANGLERS AND THEIR SPACE! PLEASE DON’T FISH ONE SPOT FOR TO LONG. CATCH & RELEASE ONLY NOW!!!
Flows: 1180 CFS! High Flows!
LITTLE TRUCKEE: With flows being bumped up one doesn’t need to go so light with the leader and tippets now. Think more about using 3x or 4x. Can only go as far as crest before last parking lot! Access is limited here as the crew working up at Stampede has it blocked past this point with heavy equipment. If you need to go further it will have to be by snowmobile, snowshoe, or foot. PLEASE LEAVE SPAWNING RAINBOWS ALONE TO DO THEIR THING! REMEMBER YOUR ETHICS AS YOU ARE STEWARDS OF THE WATERSHED! Trout here will be feeding on a steady diet of Midges and BWO/Baetis, so have all stages of these bugs in your box. The rule of thumb here has been 3x-5x depending on the situation. Fall backs to use are San Juan Worms when nothing else seems to work. Hint: the bigger fish in this system prefer emergers over adults most the time, so learn how to fish emergers effectively.
