• American black bears have flat feet with 5 toes.
• Their short, thick, sharp claws are non-retractable and are used for digging, climbing, and handling foods.
• It is normal to only see the soles of the appendages in tracks and not the claws.
• Front paw prints resemble our own hands and hind paw prints resemble our own feet.
• Front paws average about 5x5 inches while the back feet are typically 5x7 inches.
• They are plantigrade (flat-footed) walkers, as are humans.
