Dutch Oven Apple Cobbler Recipe

Dutch Oven Apple Cobbler Recipe

Read time - 3 Minutes

My favorite memories growing up were always in the kitchen cooking comfort food with my mom. From chilis and stews to breads and desserts, my mom taught me all of my favorite winter recipes and the techniques to do them correctly.

My favorite dessert my mom and I would make during winter was an apple cobbler. Cobblers are sometimes known for coming out either too runny or too firm. To prevent this from happening, my mom always suggested to use a Lodge dutch oven. The Lodge Cast Iron Dutch Oven is a versatile cooking vessel and can be used for almost any recipe in the kitchen. Since fruit cobblers can sometimes cook unevenly, using the dutch oven ensures that any cobbler you make is always cooked to perfection. This dutch oven apple cobbler takes no longer than an hour and a half to make and is something everyone in the family will love!

Dutch Oven Apple Cobbler

Serves: 4-6  |  Prep Time: 30 min  |  Cook Time: 45 min

INGREDIENTS

  • 4-5 green apples peeled, cored, and sliced (Trust me, don’t use canned apple pie filling!)

  • Cinnamon

  • Granulated Sugar

  • Brown Sugar

  • Butter (you’ll need 1 stick of butter at room temperature)

  • Salt

  • All-Purpose Flour

  • Baking Powder

  • Milk

  • Cornstarch

  • Hot Water

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 375ºF
  2. Peel, core, and slice up your apples. I used five decent sized green apples. This is the most tedious part of the recipe, but it’s worth it!
  3. Spray the bottom of your dutch oven with cooking spray. Place apples in the bottom of your Dutch oven and sprinkle the cinnamon on top. Gently mix together.
    • 2 tbsp Cinnamon
  4. In a large mixing bowl, add white sugar, brown sugar and butter. With a mixer, cream the ingredients together until the sugars are fully incorporated into the butter.
    • ¼ cup sugar, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ cup butter (softened)
  5. Now, we add dry ingredients to the butter mix: Add salt, flour, baking powder and milk to the bowl and mix. The batter should be spreadable like cake batter - if it’s not, add a little more milk until the consistency is good.
    • ⅛ tsp salt, 1 cup flour, 1 tsp baking powder, ¾ cup milk
  6. Spread the batter evenly on top of apples
  7. In a separate bowl, mix granulated & brown sugar with cornstarch & pinch of salt
    • ¼ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup sugar, 1 tbsp cornstarch, ⅛ tsp salt
  8. Now, heat ¼ cup water in the microwave for 40 seconds. Pour the hot water over ALL of the sugar – be sure to cover every grain!
  9. Place the Lodge Dutch Oven uncovered in the oven for 45 minutes at 375ºF (or until the cobbler topping starts to brown. You can test how well done the center is by using the toothpick trick. If you poke the center and there is still cake on the toothpick, cook it for a bit longer until the toothpick comes out clean.)
  10. Top with your favorite vanilla ice cream or whip cream! Enjoy!
