We’ve all been spending our fair share of time outside relaxing these days. Sprucing up our yard or outdoor space with new comfy furniture may be our only bit of solace during these times – and since today is National Hammock Day, we decided to talk about one of our favorite ways to relax. Picking out the perfect hammock is as easy looking at your outdoor space and deciding what suits your personal style best. 

Freestanding Hammocks vs. Hanging Hammocks

Freestanding hammocks can be assembled and enjoyed from your yard, balcony, deck, or anywhere without poles or trees. Made from bamboo to aluminum, free-standing hammocks give you the freedom to put your hammock wherever you have open space. The one downside is they may be heavy and more difficult to move.

Hanging hammocks allow you to loosely relax between two trees or sturdy anchor points. Traditionally they are a bit cheaper than free-standing hammocks since you don’t need to buy a stand. With lightweight and moveable freedom, you can take a hanging hammock wherever you please. Traditionally, however, they hang six to eight feet high – which may leave them a bit trickier to get into.

Single vs. Double

Single hammocks are available for when it’s just you relaxing, or if you’re bringing in another, a double may be more comfortable. Double hammocks are typically a bit more expensive, but they allow up to two people to comfortably enjoy relaxing.

Rope Hammocks

Rope hammocks are designed for warmer climates and are generally made of cotton or polyester. They offer both flexibility and support – plus with the classic bohemian look, it’ll be a great addition to your space.

Fabric Hammocks

Fabric hammocks are a bit more durable, due to more material coverage. While fabric hammocks can be used in almost any climate, they are especially great for colder temperatures. With waterproof capabilities, quilted options, and more options for color, design, and texture – they’re great for matching existing patio look and feel.

Cotton vs. Polyester

While there are many fabric materials out there for hammocks, we’ll just cover two of the most common, cotton and polyester. 

Cotton hammocks are nice and soft, which allows the material to easily conform to your body shape. Similarly to most rope hammocks, Cotton fabrics are not mold or mildew resistant, so your hammock may rot over time. If you like the soft feel of cotton, you can always bring your hammock inside during cold, wet, or other inclement weather to better keep its integrity.  

Hammocks made of polyester are usually the more durable option. They can withstand high humidity levels, sun rays, and even salty air. Hammocks with polyester tend to last longer since they’re resistant to mold and mildew.

Camping Hammocks

Camping hammocks are generally made of heavy-duty nylon that is soft, breathable, fast-drying, and easily compressible for traveling, backpacking, and camping. less of a statement piece, but still a great option for backyard relaxing. Like free-hanging hammocks, camping hammocks are generally to be hung between two trees. From tarps, bug nets, to special sleeping pads, there are many accessories that can accompany your camping hammock to make it your most comfortable wilderness sleep ever!
