Winter Home Prep Before the Holidays

Winter Home Prep Before the Holidays

Read time - 2 Minutes

Aside from stringing up the lights and decorating the tree, preparing your home for a Sierra winter, and especially before the holidays is important. These few easy winter home prep tips will help you and your family save money and hassle this winter.

Weatherproofing

Check doors and windows for gaps or areas that may cause a draft. Weatherstripping and caulk can help seal up cracks, with the addition of window film, you can help keep out drafts from aged windows. If none of these options help keep cold air out, you may need to replace windows or doors. If you’re not sure what product to use, stop in and we’ll direct you to the right one.

Heat

Always keep the heat on! Turning the heat on in your home will help prevent your pipes from freezing. Turning the heat off completely will make your heating system work extra hard when you go to turn it back on. We also suggest checking your thermostat for low batteries, or even replacing it with a programmable version. Your house guests during the holidays will appreciate the extra warmth!

Water Tank Heater

Be sure to check your water heater for any cracks – if you haven’t replaced it in 15 or so years, it may be time for a new one.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

Once you’ve turned on your heat for winter, it’s time to reverse your fan blades to turn clockwise. (Remember, hot air rises) reversing the blade rotation will produce an updraft and push hot air back down into the room.

Fireplace Inspection & Chimney Sweep

Clogged chimneys can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning or even worse, house fires. Inspecting your fireplace and chimney and having a chimney sweep at least once a year is important. Be sure to check your flue, as well, as it may be creating unwanted drafts.
