The Big Four
Collis P.
Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Mark Hopkins, The Big Four, built the Central Pacific Railroad and developed California’s railroad system between 1861 and 1900. They headed west lured by the Gold Rush where they grew their fortunes through various mercantile businesses. Theodore Judah called them together to discuss a railroad from the west to east. Prompted by the Civil War they invested much of the fortune and energy in building the western part of the first transcontinental railroad and eventually the Big Four controlled an extensive network of railroad enterprises in California.
