Mama Bear & Her Cubs

• In mid-winter and mid-hibernation, the female black bear will give birth to two or three blind, toothless cubs.
• Once born, she will continue her hibernation while the cubs, weighing six to twelve ounces at birth, will continue to nurse until the spring.
• The cubs are weaned from their mother after approximately seven moths, but will continue to remain with her until their second summer.
• When it is time for the other to mate once again, the yearlings are sent off to discover their own territories and fend for themselves.
